Olympic Cycle Race comes to Box Hill

The Olympics is coming to Box Hill for the men’s road race on Saturday July 28, 2012 and the women’s race the following day.  The course involves a circuit up our beloved Zig-zags, along Box Hill Road and Headley Common Road before going through Tyrell’s Wood and back down the A24 to the Burford Bridge.

The men’s race is around 250 kilometres, including nine laps of a 15.5km circuit of Box Hill, with the women’s race on Sunday just 140 kilometres and including two laps of Box Hill.

The route starts and finishes on The Mall, London, and travels south west through Putney, Richmond Park, Twickenham, Westhumble and Dorking before arriving at Box Hill, including the famous Zig Zag Road to the top. The riders then return north through, Leatherhead, Esher, Hampton Court and Kingston-upon-Thames to the Mall

This will be a great opportunity for the Church and the local community at Box Hill. I will certainly be there cheering the England Team on.

Congratulations to Andy who wins a prize for being the first person to work out how to leave a comment!

Should we be accelerating plans to have a Bike Cafe / Church on a Saturday morning?

    • Andy Jacobson says:

As the Olympics get closer, more and more cyclists will be coming to Box Hill to climb the zig zags. I think that a drop-in cafe for cyclists would be a great idea. It would require a team of willing volunteers and be well publicised amongst the cycling community. It could also sell energy drinks and snacks.

P.S. It was great to be at St Andrew’s thsi morning.

      • I spoke to Charlie at the Lent Group tonight and he is enthusiastic about this – I think we should go for a little outdoor advertising along Box Hill road and give it a go for a couple of Saturday mornings after Easter

Have been to Box Hill during the early 50’s when we lived in Purley. I remember how beautiful the view s were–and the large number of people riding bikes up and down.
